I am really excited to share this simple costume DIY with you all! The unicorn trend doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon, and my cute little girl has completely embraced it! This year for Halloween, I made her an easy DIY unicorn costume, and I wanted to put together a little tutorial to help you all make your own unicorn costume.
This costume DIY is completely no-sew, which is my favorite kind of costume! VELCRO® Brand Sticky Back for Fabrics make it super easy to pull this costume together. I have included everything you will need to make your own unicorn costume below including a video tutorial and free printable templates!
Easy, No Sew DIY Unicorn Costume
This costume consists of simple solid colored clothing plus a DIY unicorn horn headband, a DIY unicorn tail belt, and DIY unicorn hoof shoe covers and wristbands.
The video below will walk you through the steps of creating the costume. Keep scrolling to find links to the items I used, written instructions, and my free printable templates. (If the video is not showing up below, you can watch it on the VELCRO® Brand Youtube channel HERE.)
DIY Unicorn Costume Supplies:
- White Clothes (We used this white dress + white tights)
- White Felt (a 1/4 yard should be plenty)
- 9″ x 12″ Felt Sheets in your favorite unicorn colors (we went with pink and purple)
- Rotary Cutter and Cutting Mat (optional, but helpful)
- Permanent Fabric Glue
- Plain Plastic Headband
- Foam Unicorn Horn
- Acrylic Craft Paint (Glitter paint is fun!)
- Sequin Trim
- Hot Glue Gun
- Craft Foam
- VELCRO® Brand Sticky Back for Fabrics
DIY Unicorn Costume Tail
- Take 6 sheets of 9″ x 12″ felt, and lay them horizontally on your cutting mat. Starting from the bottom, make a cut at every inch leaving a 2 inch strip uncut at the top of the felt sheet. Repeat with all six sheets.
- Use fabric glue to glue your six sheets together so that the fringed cuts are overlapping. When the glue has dried, roll up your glued-together sheets and use glue at the top to secure them into a long fringed tassel shape. This is your unicorn tail!
- Cut a piece of felt 2 inches wide and the length of the waist plus four inches. Glue sequin trim onto one side of the felt strip. Cut off a piece of VELCRO® Brand Sticky Back for Fabrics fastener and attach it to one side of the belt and the other side, so the belt overlaps and closes.
- Glue the tail behind the inside half of the hook and loop fastener.
DIY Unicorn Costume Headband
- Start off by painting your horn with acrylic craft paint and setting it aside to dry. I found sticking a skewer into the bottom of the horn made it easy to paint. If you are using a glitter paint, you may want to start off with a base coat of a similar solid color paint.
- Wrap the top of this large felt tassel mane around the headband and secure in place with hot glue.
- Use wire and hot glue to attach the horn on top of where the mane attaches to the headband. Wrap the wire around the headband for security.
- Add smaller felt fringe pieces in front of and around the horn to create bangs. Glue felt pieces over any exposed wire.
DIY Unicorn Hoof Shoe Covers and Wristbands
- Start off by printing out the templates from the link below. There are three different sizes available. Choose the size that fits your child best. You can scale the templates up or down if needed.
- Trace the template onto your craft foam and cut out the shape.
- Use VELCRO® Brand Sticky Back for Fabrics to join the ends of the template together around the wrist or shoe. (Be careful when unhooking the fasteners as the craft foam can tear if you pull too forcefully.)

Hello, I’m wondering how you get the heavy headband to stay on? I followed your instructions and it falls off my daughter when she is moving about. Thanks
