Sunburst Hexagon - free crochet pattern

Today’s post officially kicks off our second Blog Hop Crochet Along! Yay!

This time around, we are doing hexagons! There will be eight new hexagon patterns as well as eight projects you can make with those hexagons. You can read all about the details of the crochet along right HERE.

Are you ready to make some hexagons? Here we go!

Crochet Hexagon Pattern Materials:

  • H (5.00 mm) hook (The finished hexagon should be about five  inches across from corner to opposite corner. You may need to adjust your hook size to achieve the correct size.)
  • Worsted weight yarn in three colors (We used Knit Pick’s Brava, which is a great acrylic yarn that crochets smoothly and comes in lots of fun colors – I used Dove Heather, Denim, and Solstice Heather for the motif above.)

Special Stitch:

2 dc cluster – Yarn over, insert hook into next st, yarn over, draw up new loop, yarn over, draw through first two loops (2 loops remain on hook). Yarn over, insert hook into next st, yarn over, draw up new loop, yarn over, draw through first two loops (3 loops remain on hook), yarn over, draw through all three loops (See image below). 2 dc cluster completed.

2 dc cluster

Round 1: Using Color A, chain 3 (counts as first dc), work 11 dc in first ch, sl st to join (12 dc).

Round 2: Join Color B in back loop of any stitch. Working in back loops only, 2 sc in each st around (24 sc).

round 2

Round 3: Ch 2, dc in next st, *ch 4, sc in second ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in final ch (see image below), 2 dc cluster over next two stitches, repeat from * around sl st to top of starting 2 dc cluster (12 clusters and 12 spikes). Finish off Color B.

round 3

Round 4: Join Color C in top ch 1 of any spike. Ch 1, sc  in same sp, * 3 dc in top of 2 dc cluster below, sc in top ch 1 of next spike, (dc, ch 3, dc) all in top of 2 dc cluster below, sc in top ch 1 of next spike, repeat from * around, ending with (dc, ch 3, dc), sl st into beginning sc.

round 4

Round 5: Ch 2, hdc next 5 sts, (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in corner space, *hdc in next 7 sts, (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in corner space, repeat from * 4 times, hdc in next st, sl st to top of beginning ch 2. Finish off. Weave in ends.

Here’s what one of the hexagons looks like sewn into my heart-shaped pillow (get the pattern right HERE):

Hi! I really like the pattern and all, but row 5 was kind of confusing for me. The HDC didn’t match up with the actual corners and so I’m just going through, HDC-ing and (HDC, 2 ch, HDC) in the actual corners.

Hi Lizzie! I’m sorry you are having some trouble, but yes, that is exactly what you should do – hdc around with (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in the corner spaces. Thanks!

Just wondering if any one else is making all hexagons same colors or each one a different combination of colors?
    Looking forward to these.
    Happy crocheting.

I ended up doing the same color for each outer round on my final project, but you can do whatever you like! Check out the final projects here for ideas: http://persialou.com/2015/04/the-blog-hop-crochet-along-hexagons.html

On row 4 there is a *repeat from, but not another * anywhere in the instructions, I think I understand , because I’ve crocheted enough years, but someone new might need that. * placed where to repeat. Thanks for the pattern, it’s cute. Now to find the other patterns for the camera neck band.

Hi Sharon! Thanks so much for catching that. I just fixed the error. 🙂 The other hexagons are more clearly linked at the bottom of the pattern post as well now. Have a great day!
