These Color Block Crochet Baskets are perfect for storing odds and ends in style. Just follow the free crochet basket pattern to quickly make your own cute baskets, and add in some fun with a simple and subtle color blocking technique. I have been working on organizing, cleaning, and prettying up my new craft room for the past month or so. I will have the full tour for you all on Monday, but first I wanted to share one of the little projects that went into finishing the space: these cute little crochet baskets, which are the new home (or part of it anyway) for my washi tape collection.
Thick cord and a big hook means these baskets work up super quickly, and adding in a little embroidery thread creates a fun color block look that I really dig. For the crochet basket pattern, I just added color for the last couple of rounds, but feel free to be creative and create your own design!
Color Block Crochet Baskets Supplies:
- Cotton Macrame Cord (one spool was enough for each basket)
- Cotton Embroidery Thread (I used one skein for the small basket and two for the large)
- Size N (10.00 mm) Hook
- Scissors
Note: The macrame cord is somewhat stiff and can be a little rough on your hands. I think it produces a beautiful basket, but if you are concerned about that, you might want to try replacing it with an alternative. I think that three strands of worsted cotton yarn (like sugar n cream) held together would give you a similar thickness. Good luck!
Large Color Block Crochet Baskets Pattern (about 6″ across)
Round 1: Begin with a magic loop, and work 7 sc into the loop, sl st to join (7 sc).
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st, 2 sc in each st around, sl st to join (14 sc).
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, 2 sc in next st, * sc, 2 sc, repeat from * around, sl st to join (21 sc).
Round 4: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, * sc, sc, 2 sc, repeat from * around, sl st to join (28 sc).
Round 5: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, * sc, sc, sc, 2 sc, repeat from * around, sl st to join (35 sc).
Round 6: Ch 1, working in back loops only (see image below), sc in each stitch around, sl st to join (35 sc).
Crocheting in the back loops only helps to create a nice crisp edge to the bottom of the basket, which you can see forming below.
Rounds 7-8: Ch 1, sc in each stitch around, sl st to join (35 sc).
For the last two rounds, crochet the colored craft thread with the macrame cord to give it the subtle color blocking effect. To do this, you just hold the craft thread and the macrame cord together and crochet them as if they were only one piece of yarn or cord.
Rounds 9-10: Holding craft thread together with macrame cord, ch 1, sc in each stitch around, sl st to join (35 sc).
Finish off. Use hook to weave ends in a bit. Clip off ends. Annnnnd… all done!
The smaller basket pattern is worked in the same way as the large basket with just a few changes.

Round 4: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, * sc, sc, 2 sc, repeat from * around, sl st to join (28 sc).

Round 6: Ch 1, sc in each stitch around, sl st to join (28 sc).

These little guys are the perfect size for any little items you want corralled but still close at hand. Of course, I’ve got loads of little craft supplies, so that’s what I had in mind, but they’d also be great for keys, loose change, whatever you have laying around.
That’s it, folks!

I didn’t find The pattern for the rectangle baskets
Alexis says
Hi Shirley – I’m not sure what rectangle baskets you are referring to. This pattern is for round baskets. Did you see rectangle baskets somewhere?
Cindy says
On Pntrest, there are three dark grey rectangle baskets shown. When you click on it, you are redirected to your site. I too saw it. Either way, I love your round baskets and will be making them for a friend’s newborn! Thanks for the patters…
Alexis says
Thanks, Cindy! I didn’t pin the image, and I’m not sure how it got attached to my post! It’s a mystery I guess. Haha! 🙂 Have a great day!

I also came to this website because of the photos of the rectangular baskets, so it’s disappointing that they’re not featured here.
Alexis says
I’m sorry! Unfortunately, I can’t control what images people pin. I think what happened is that someone pinned an image from an ad that was on the post at one point, and now it has just been pinned a lot on pinterest. I don’t know know the original source of the image or if there is anything I can do to fix the issue. I’m sorry! Maybe I will need to work up a rectangular basket pattern! 🙂

What creative , fun ideas . Thanks for sharing !

Just finished a large basket. I am experienced at crocheting but somehow ended up increasing the base by 6 stitches. You do not say to slip stitch at the end of each row but I would assume that is what should be done. Also found the cord twist terribly and keeping the crochet thread untangled was a trip. Ripped this out once and it was so hard on my hands I left the increases and added handles. Still came nice but a few extra tips would have helped. Thanks
Alexis says
Hi Janet! I’m glad you like the finished basket. Yes, you should slip stitch and the end of each round, and it was a mistake that that was left out of the pattern. I went back and added it in. Thank you! I didn’t have much trouble with the cord twisting, but maybe pulling it off of the spool and winding it into a ball would help? The cord is a bit rough on your hands, I should probably add a note about that. Thank you for your feedback.

Thank you for sharing. I can’t wait to make them for my daughters.

I live in the UK and was wondering how thick the macrame cord was that you used in your crochet baskets? Also, do you have the pattern for the lovely charcoal coloured rectangular baskets? I can’t seem to find it anywhere!! Do you have a suggestion for alternative cording or thread as a substitute for the macrame cord. Any advise or help would be greatly appreciated
Alexis says
Hello! The cord I used is 3 mm wide. I am not sure what charcoal baskets you are referring to. Sorry! I’m not much help with that. I think that three strands of worsted cotton yarn would be a good substitute for the macrame cord, but it probably won’t be quite as stiff as these baskets. I hope that helps! 🙂
Lorrie says
She is referring to the rectangular baskets that are pictured on pinterest and when clicked on we are lead here to your page by mistake. I love your pattern , but I too was looking for the other.
Alexis says
Hi Lorrie! I’m not sure how that image on pinterest got linked to this post. It’s possible that someone pinned an image from an ad or something? I’m sorry! I wish I was more help.

How do you make the ” magic circle”. You have to know how to do that before doung basket.
Alexis says
Hi Jean! I have been meaning to do a video on the magic circle or magic loop, but haven’t gotten to it yet. Here’s a great one from Moogly that should help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK8vTCcVu-4 Good luck! 🙂

Hello! These baskets are so nice!!! I would like you to explain me what you mean by 1 Ch, 2sc in each stich. Would that be 1 stitch sc and the 1 augmentation???? Thanks!!!!
Alexis says
Hello there! Are you referring to round 2? For that, you need to chain 1 for the first stitch, just to bring the working cord up to the level of a single crochet stitch. Then you will work two single crochet stitches into each stitch of the previous round. This will double your single crochet stitches from 7 to 14 and keep the circle flat. I hope that answers your question. Good luck!

Hi Jeanne – I’m not sure how that image got attached to my post on Pinterest. I don’t have any pattern for square grey baskets. I’m sorry!

Hi if anyone finds the pattern for the 3 rectangle gray baskets that’s in the picture could you put a reference for in a reply. Thanks so much Joy

This is essentially the very first project for me, back in 1977! My college roommate taught me to make a round basket with macrame cord (quite easy to find at that time!), and it came out GREAT! I don’t remember what stitch we used. We used them as Easter baskets for our boyfriends. A 45 rpm record fit perfectly in the bottom. (No handle)
Kacie says
Do you have to use a cord
linda burgess says
