Washi Tape Teacups

One of the little details that I really liked from my daughter’s tea party birthday celebration were the little teacups I embellished.

I considered using vintage teacups, but decided that I would rather not worry about the possibility of broken dishes. I found some clear plastic coffee cups on Amazon that had a pretty shape, and I also picked up some small clear plates at the dollar store. So, I was set with three-year-old-safe teacups and saucers, but I still needed a way to make them special.

At first I thought I would embellish with gold paint, but I didn’t really like the way my first attempts were coming out. Then, I thought about using some washi tape. It was perfect! The translucence of the tape is perfect for the clear cups because you can see the pattern through the cup as well.

Because the top of the cup is slightly wider than the base, the tape wouldn’t go on the the cup in a straight line without some manipulation. I ended up cutting slits in the top of the tape so it could stretch out a bit (you can see the slits in the photo above).

I finished off embellishing my tea set with a thin pink ribbon on the handle, and a little washi tape wrapped around the spoon. So simple, so easy, and such a pretty addition to our party table.
