Project Get Something on My Walls: 3D Floral Canvas

I would estimate that about 70% of our wall space is bare. naked. sad.
I’m sick of it, and I’m taking action.

So. Our first PGSOMW project was inspired by something I saw on HGTV Design Star. Do you watch this show?

All of the season five episodes were on HGTV’s website at some point last year, and I think I probably watched the whole season in like two days.

Sometimes TV happens.

It’s okay.

Anyway… For one episode they had to take all of the junk in a sad, old apartment and reuse it in their design. Great challenge, right? The girl who ended up winning the show, Emily Henderson, made this box pendant lamp by attaching silk flowers and then spray painting the whole thing white. I really liked the look and thought the same technique would make a fun wall hanging. And it did!

What do you think? Do you need one for a bare wall in your house?

If so, here’s what you’ll need:

a canvas (I used some old ones that I repainted)
some silk flowers (use cheap or old–they’re getting painted anyway)
hot glue
spray paint

Unless you are using a white canvas and white spray paint, I would recommend painting the canvas first to make sure you can’t see any of the canvas’ original color peeping through.

After your canvas is dry, arrange your silk flowers on the canvas. Use your hot glue gun to attach your flowers to the canvas. The flower heads can be glued at different angles, so play around and see what you like.

Let the glue dry, and then go to town with your spray paint. It will take several coats and quite a bit of paint. Probably more than you think. You’ve got to get the paint into all those little nooks and crannies.

When the paint is dry, hang it up and enjoy one fewer bare wall!

How cool is that. So easy, go to DI get some old canvases, paint them. You might even find the flowers there….. SO COOL!!

So beautiful. I'll have to give this a try. Does it sort of decay or fall apart over time or does the paint preserve it?
