Handmade Gift Idea Heating Pad Washable Cover: Guest Post by Julia from It’s Always Ruetten

Hi Persia Lou fans! My name is Julia and I blog at It’s Always Ruetten. I write a little about cooking, a little about decor, and a lot about do-it-yourself projects. I hope you jump over and check out my blog!

Happy day-after-Thanksgiving! If you’re not in a total food coma and are starting to think about Christmas (already!) then I have the perfect handmade gift tutorial for you. Whether you live in a cold-weather state, like Montana where I was born and raised, or a fleetingly cold state like New Mexico where I live now… we’re definitely hitting the cold months. So, what is one thing everyone is searching for this time of year? Warmth! Keep reading to find out how to make this two-part heating pad and cute washable cover gift set!

Handmade Heating Pad & Washable Cover Tutorial

Step One: Get your supplies together:
Polar fleece
Contrasting thread
Scrap of fabric
Scissors
Heat transfer (Heat n Bond)
Iron
Printed out shape or letter
Sewing machine
Velcro
Quilting ruler or measuring tape
{Optional}:
Cutting mat
Rotary cutter

Step Two: Cut your polar fleece into a square so when you fold it over you have a rectangle. My “square” was 16″x12″. Fold your square wrong sides together. {folded it is 6″x16″}

Step Three: Using your sewing machine, sew one short side and the long side closed using a decorative stitch (zigzag, if nothing else).

Step Four: Trim up your open edge. The great thing about fleece is that it doesn’t fray so you can leave all of the edges unfinished!

Now, set aside your pouch and print your letter or shape and grab your scrap fabric.

Step Five: Cut your heat transfer material (I had Heat n Bond strips on hand) so they fit the size of your letter or shape. Then, on the back of your scrap fabric iron on the heat transfer material.

Step Six: Flip your heat bonded fabric over and cut out your letter or shape…

Step Seven: Play around with your cut out shape to find the best placement.

Step Eight: Once you have your placement down, peel the back off your letter or shape.

Step Nine: *DO AS I SAY NOT AS I SHOW!* Place your shape on the pouch and with the tip of your iron carefully iron your shape on. Try your best to not let the iron touch the polar fleece… Also, do not iron on your cutting mat if you have one!

Why be so careful when you iron? So you don’t get an iron burn like I did!

Step Ten: Apply velcro on the open edge of your pouch… then you’re done!
