Make Your Own DIY Modern Spring Wreath

Learn how to makeΒ your own Modern Spring Wreath with just a few simple supplies, and welcome Spring with this fun and stylish DIY! This project was made in collaboration with Hobby Lobby. As always, I only share brands and products that I use and love.

DIY Modern Spring Wreath

So I know there has been some crazy cold weather back east lately, but here in the desert it feels a bit like we skipped right over Spring and headed straight into Summer! Slooooow down, please!

IΒ am really hoping for some beautiful Spring weather, and willing it be so by creating lots of Springy crafts and home decor like my new DIY Modern Spring Wreath. I wanted to make something with some beautiful floral elements, a few pops of bright color, and the clean, modern lines I love. IΒ headed over to Hobby Lobby to gatherΒ supplies and spent at leastΒ an hour just browsing the floral section. Just the floral section, guys. BUT – I’m saying it was time well-spent because I mean, just look at these blooms!

DIY Modern Spring Wreath

I was super impressed with those big roses. Aren’t they great? Definitely my faves. I love the combination of the pretty, organic florals and the more clean lines of the wooden hoop and leather.

If you want to make your own DIY Modern Spring Wreath, I’ve got you covered. Here’s everything you’ll need to make your own!

DIY Modern Spring Wreath supplies

Modern Spring Wreath Supplies:

  • 14″ Wooden Embroidery HoopΒ (or whatever size you want for your wreath)
  • Greenery – I used palm leaves for my base and some smaller green sprigs to fill in.
  • Flowers – Choose a few larger flowers and some smaller ones to fill in around the big blooms. I used these and these.
  • Floral Cutters and Wire Nippers
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Leather Strip (found in the leather working section – 1 1/2″ x 42″)
  • Leather Punch, Mallet,Β Heavy Duty Snaps, and Fastener Pliers (optional, but recommended)

How to Make a Modern Spring Wreath

1. Add Greenery

The first step in creating your own modern spring wreath is to create a base using greenery that you will place your pretty blooms onto. I chose palm leaves for my base because I always associate palms with Palm Sunday and Easter, plus tropical leaves are very on-trend right now and have that great graphic look I love. The bundle of palm leaves was bigΒ and thereby a bit on the pricey side, but luckily I had a 40% off coupon! (You can snag your own coupon here or just scroll to the end of the post to get the current coupon.)

I snipped the stems off of my leaves using my wire cutters and hot glued a few leaves onto the embroidery hoop making sure to cover the embroidery hoop screws.

2. Plan Flower Placement

Before gluing any of your flowers in place, you want to plan out the placement. Remove the larger blooms from their stems to make it easier to place. Start by placing the large blooms and then fill in the spaces with smaller flowers, berries, and greenery. Move things around until you are happy with the arrangement, and if you want, snap a picture with your phone to help you remember it.

3. Glue on Florals

Next, use your hot glue gun to glue the florals in place. Again, start with the largest blooms and then fill in with the smaller pieces. Refer to your photo of the arrangement as necessary.

4. Set Snaps in Leather Strip

I decided to hang my wreath with a leather strip instead of a ribbon for another little modern touch. If you wanted, you could just glue the leather strip around your hoop, but I love the look of the gold snap holding it together. If you have never worked with leather before, don’t be scared! You really only need a couple of tools to add a snap to your leather strip, and it is easier than you may think.

Start by marking where you want to place either side of your snaps. Use the leather punch and a wooden or rubber mallet (not a metal hammer!) to make holes on your marks. Each snap is made ofΒ four different pieces, and each half is made ofΒ two pieces. Place the two pieces on either side of the leather strip and set with the pliers. The pliers crush the middle part of the snap down around the hole to hold the snap in place. Finally, snap the leather strip around the top of the hoop to hang.

5. Hang and Enjoy!

To hang the wreath on your door, lay the leather strip over the top of the door and hold in place with thumbtacks through the leather into the top of the door. And, that’s it! I am loving my new modern spring wreath. ItΒ just makes my front door so happy!

Hi April! I got all of the flowers from Hobby Lobby. I couldn’t find those particular ones on the web site, but hopefully you can find them in your store. Hope that helps! πŸ™‚

I’d like to put this on my front door but how would I attach the leather strap to the door?

Hi Lindsay! You can nail the strap into the top of your door, or I actually attached mine with duct tape. It may take off some of the paint, but since it’s at the top of the door, you shouldn’t be able to see it. πŸ™‚ Hope that helps!

This is such a cute idea. I have about 20 embroidery hoops and I tend to use them for everything but embroidery. I lack the patience :p I’m a pain in the butt vegan so I will have to think outside the box for a stylish hanging option (instead of leather) but I love this. Great job.

A vegan leather would work great too! Or maybe some cool twine? Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment, Claire! πŸ™‚

This looks so cute! Do you think I could make paper leaves and flowers instead so I could save more money? Also, what does <3 mean? Can’t wait to dry out this neat DIY!

Hi! Yes, you could absolutely use paper flowers and leaves. I have done a few wreaths with paper flowers that I love. <3 is just an emoticon for a heart. πŸ™‚ Thanks for stopping by!
