Chunky Crochet Bow Pattern

Learn how to make giant crochet bows to add to gifts, bows and more with this Chunky Crochet Bow Pattern. I originally shared this pattern at Darice, and this post may contain affiliate links, which help to support this site. Thank you!

Last year I organized and participated in a really fun crochet along. Ten different bloggers wrote twenty new afghan square patterns, and I actually got to piece them all together into a beautiful afghan that we gave away.
Anyway, one of the patterns had a design element that was new to me, and I wanted to play around with it in a different application, and that was the beginning of these fun chunky crochet bows. San’s Winter Flower Square weaves long chain loops together to create a braided or cabled look that I really love. In this pattern, I used the same technique to create a cabled bow.
Originally, I made the pattern with a chunky weight yarn and a J hook to create a big gift topper.

But I also played around with different yarn weights and hooks to create different size bows.

The top bow was made with Knit Picks Brava (worsted weight) and an I hook. The middle bow was made with Knit Picks Palette (fingering weight) held together with a tonal lace weight yarn and a G hook. The smallest bow was made with Palette (fingering weight) and an E hook.

The smallest size would make a cute hair bow or head band. A bigger size is fun on a gift or sewn onto a bag or pillow.

Chunky Crochet Bow Pattern

Row 1: Ch 14, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, ch 6, sc in each of next 3 chs, ch 6, sc in each of next 3 chs, ch 6, sc in each of next 3 chs, ch 6, sc in final 2 chs. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next sc, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop from previous row, dc in each of next 3 sts, repeat from * three times finishing with 2 dcs instead of 3 dcs. Now you can weave the loops of the first two rows together by twisting the bottom ch 6 loop and pulling the ch 6 loop from the second row through the loop. (See the photo below) Turn.

Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc in next st, dc next two sts together, repeat from * twice, ch 6, skip ch 6 loop,dc in next 2 sts. Weave loops from row 2 and 3 together by pulling the row 3 loops up through the row 2 loops (continue to weave loops together after each row in this manner). Turn.

Row 4: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc in next 2 sts, repeat from * three times. Weave loops. Turn.

Row 5: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc next two sts together, repeat from * twice, ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc in next 2 sts. Weave loops. Turn.

Row 6: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc in next st, repeat from * three times, dc in final st. Weave loops. Turn.

Row 7: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *sc in ch 6 loop, dc in next st, repeat from * three times, dc in final st. Turn.

Row 14: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc in next 2 sts, repeat from * three times. Weave loops. Turn.

Row 15: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * twice, ch 6, skip 6 ch loop, dc in next 2 sts. Weave loops. Turn.

Crochet Bow Center

Row 1: Ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in 4 remaining chs (5 sc). Turn.

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, dc in next st, repeat from * once, dc in last st. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc in next st, repeat from * once, dc in last st. Weave loops. Turn.

Rows 4-9: Repeat row 3. Row 10: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *sc in ch 6 loop, dc in next st, repeat from * once, dc in last st. Turn.

Row 11: Ch 1, sc in same st, *sc next 2 sts together, sc in next st, repeat from * (5 sc). Finish off. Weave in ends.

To finish the crochet bow, wrap the center piece around the middle of the bow. Using a yarn needle and a piece of yarn, sew the ends of the center piece together.

And that’s it! Tie that cute bow onto a gift or glue it onto a hair clip!
