This is my fourth month participating in the Make It: Fun Crafts Team Challenge, and this month was a doozy. Each month we get a box of foam and a theme to guide our crafting. So far, I’ve made a woven blanket wreath, mini fruit piñatas, and a kids rocket ship craft. I really enjoy these challenges because they push me outside a little outside my comfort zone, and so far I have been able to come up with something I like without too much of a struggle.
But this month really stumped me at first. We were given a bunch of FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam cones in different sizes and were challenged to come up with a summery home decor project. Cones at Christmas time – no problem. But Summertime? A bit more tricky, right?
What would you do? I thought of a sunburst thing, some kind of ice cream cone something, a candlestick, a hanging planter, and finally ended up here with this faux plaster vase. I am really happy with how it turned out. The cone shape is clean and modern and the black and white design gives me the geometric look I love.
Want to make one too? Let’s do it!
Supplies:
- Large FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam cones
- FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam Cutter
- FloraCraft® Smooth Finish®
- Thin Glass Bud Vase
- White Spray Paint
- Black Acrylic Paint
- Round Brush
Start off by cutting the top of the cone off using the foam cutter. I used the vase as a guide and cut it a couple inches longer than the vase.
Next, you will need to carve out a place to insert the bud vase. I pressed the vase into the top of the foam to give me shape and size.
Then I used the foam cutter to carve out the space. This took a bit of work, but the FloraCraft® cutter is nice because it has a long flexible blade. Once you have carved out the space, push the bud vase in.
My vase fit really snugly, so I didn’t feel the need to glue it in. Next comes the magic! This smooth finish stuff is really cool guys. You spread it over the foam and it gives you – you guessed it! – a smooth finish.
I used an old plastic card to spread it on and gently scrape off the excess. Once the smooth finish has dried, you can paint it! I used a semi-gloss white spray paint to start.
Then I went back and added a simple brushstroke pattern using a round brush and black craft paint. You know I love me a black and white geometric look!
And when that paint is all dry, fill your vase up with some water and add flowers! I would say the outside of the vase is water resistant, but if you really wanted it waterproof, you could cover the whole thing with a clear sealer.
