Small Shared Boy and Girl’s Bedroom: Vintage Disneyland Room Reveal

The day has finally come! After a over a year of planning, pinning, dreaming, painting, quilting, and shopping, I am ready to call my kids’ vintage Disneyland room reveal ready.
When I started planning this room, I was facing a few challenges. First of all, I really wanted the room to be something that both my all-boy son and girly-girl daughter would love. Coming up with a fun theme for a shared boy and girl’s room can be a bit of a challenge. Secondly, I needed to fit two beds, two kids’ worth of stuff, and some play space in a small (about 11’x11′) room. Finally, the walls were already navy with white beadboard on the bottom, and I wanted to incorporate that into the room.
I am a big Disneyland fan, and I have always been particularly fond of the vintage attraction posters, so I used those as a jumping off point for my design plan.
My plan included bunk beds (to leave space in the room for playing); bold, graphic patterns inspired by the attraction posters; vintage touches; brass hardware; and a limited color scheme of navy, coral, teal, yellow, orange, and chartreuse. Anyway. Enough talking already!
Would you like to come in?
Bunk Bed – Ikea, painted Valspar City Chartreuse in semi-gloss
DIY Vintage Disneyland pennants
Herringbone Quilts
Sun Lamp – Ikea
In addition to the reproduction prints I purchased on ebay and framed in spray-painted frames, my dear sister MADE a beautiful version of the Tiki Room poster that is hanging proudly in the kids’ room.
DIY Decoupage Globe
Dresser – Ikea Tarva, painted, stained, with new hardware
I painted coral stripes on the curtains to mimic the stripes in the pirate ship’s sail on the Peter Pan attraction poster. Painting curtains is not for the weak, friends. They are so far from perfect, but I like the overall look. Just don’t get too close. The rug was a STEAL for twenty dollars shipped (!) from Urban Outfitters.
Table – Home Goods
I spray painted a silver lamp with brass spray paint and added teal grosgrain ribbon to a plain white lampshade to make the lamp a little more special.
Four Ikea picture ledges hold Disneyland memorabilia mixed in with special treasures.
And there it is! I hope it was worth the wait. What do you guys think? I am really so happy with it. And I think the kids like it too.

What a lovely room! I can't imagine how difficult it is to do a room for a boy and a girl, but you pulled it off really well! I really like the bedspreads and the curtains!

Thank you! I was really intimidated when I first started working on my plan for the room, but one I had the color scheme nailed down, it got a little less scary. 🙂

You've got to be kidding me! This is sooo cool. I'm in LOVE with how you took it slightly retro Disney. Such attention to detail. I've got a girl and boy combo room, too… love that it's so gender neutral yet full of color. I'm pining this for sure. Those quilts… amazing.

Super cute! Great job having boy & girl together. I shared a room with my brother for a few years when I was little and for the life of me I can't even remember what the room looked like!

This is adorable and it really works for both genders! I love how her bed is surrounded by the white wainscoting and his bed is right by the dark blue paint. You did a great job! I'm stopping by from Create & Inspire party (my link up was #92 Easy Creamy Spaghetti) Have a great day!

What a perfect room for kids! Love the lime green paint of bunk beds and the yellow side table. The window curtains look light and airy! The stripes pattern on the curtains make the window look bigger and wider! 🙂

this is gorgeous! If you didn't call it vintage Disneyland, I don't think i'd realize there was a theme, which I love. I mean, I do themes-my basement, for sure, but I like the way this all just works. fabulous!

I could totally move into this room! I love the dark and white walls, Iv heard people say you cant have black in a kids room but when its done right you absolutely can its such a great background for art and decor. Bet the kids are happy with it, hopefully they'll even keep it clean once in a while too 😉 Awesome job!

This is simply stunning, Alexis! The color palette is fab and I love all the touches…especially the decoupaged globe. As an Orlando girl VERY near to Disney, this makes my heart so happy. Best of luck with CWTS! 😉

Alexis you sure put Disney into the kids room because it is a dream land. It is also hard to mix both personalities into a shared room but girl and boy room with a touch for each is fabulous.
