Halloween Boo Plaque: Dollar Store Tray Upgrade

How about another black and white Halloween decor craft today? I think my Halloween vignette is all done now, and I’m happy to show it off all finished to you soon. This little sign/plaque/whatever you want to call it adds a bit of fun to the display, and it cost me a whole dollar to make using craft supplies I had on hand.
It started off with a black plastic tray that I found at the dollar store. I thought it looked like it could maybe work as a frame, and right away I knew I wanted to try gilding some of those skulls on the border.
I painted the inside of the tray white using matte craft paint and a brush. It took a couple coats. Then I gilded two of the skulls using metal leaf. (See more about how to gild here.) I finished it off by painting a swirly “boo” using a round brush and black acrylic paint. I freehanded the lettering, but did do a couple practice sketches on a piece of paper first. If you feel uncomfortable painting freehanded, you could use a stencil or vinyl lettering.
That’s it. A quick little piece of Halloween decor.

You are a gilding goddess. I&#39;ve got to try my hands at it. <br />Question. You don&#39;t mention using any sealer. In your experience, do you think it&#39;s unnecessary? Are there certain situations where it should be used? I&#39;m always a fan of reducing the number of steps in a project 😛

Those plates are so cute, I love them too..I am using them as chargers, whenever I change the post for a new one, love the way you made one skeleton gold, it is so smart to paint the center white like it is a plate…Yay…Phyllis
