DIY Black and White Geometric Art

*This post contains affiliate links.
A couple weeks ago I posted about the new gallery wall that I put together in our Master bedroom. I made a few new pieces of art for the gallery wall, and the one I’m sharing with you guys today is definitely my favorite.
This DIY Geometric Art was inspired by a book I ordered a month ago called Design Motifs of Ancient Mexico. It is full of really cool designs and patterns, and I thought one would make some great art for my gallery wall.
I started with a canvas that had already been painted a couple of times. It’s most recent incarnation involved attaching silk flowers to the canvas with hot glue. I ripped all the flowers off and gave the entire canvas a coating of white spray paint to start over. Of course, you could start this off with a new canvas, but I though the texture left from the hot glue and previous paintings added something to the piece.
I opened up my book to the inspiration image and got to painting.
I started off by mapping out the stripes and different areas of the canvas. I could have plotted things out more with pencil first, but I just jumped right in with paint because I was going for a more kind of primitive look and wasn’t too worried about mess ups.
For the section of the painting with the circles, I painted the circles first and then went back and filled in all the black around the circles.
And then I painted lots and lots of triangles. LOTS.
To give it a more finished, fancy look, I framed it out with some thin wood around the edges. Back in January, Sarah from Life on Virginia Street made some gorgeous DIY art, and I especially loved the framing technique she used. I’ve been dying to give it a try, and this was my opportunity.
I used the lattice wood Sarah recommended, mitred the corners, and gave one side and both edges a coat of metallic gold spray paint and the other side a coat of black acrylic paint.
Nailed the frame into the canvas, and it was all ready to hang!
The frame really finishes the piece and makes it feel so much more special. I love, love it.
What do you think? Do you like the geometric look? Have you framed a canvas before?

I love anything geometric and black&white — and I LOVE how you did the frame! My husband and I both studied art in college, so we have a lot of paintings on canvas just waiting for a little love, but frames are so expensive! I may just have to try this. 🙂

This is so easy and chic – the skinny gold frame is the perfect touch! Also, picking up a book like that for ideas is so smart. Thanks for giving me a new idea on how to approach inspiration – sometimes I forget there are more resources than just Pinterest!
