Well, folks, today is supposed to be the first day to hit 100 degrees here, so it is officially, without-a-doubt Summer.
Summer means a lot of things to me – mostly AC, pools, and sunscreen. But when I think Summer, I also think barbecues and watermelon – big ol’ juicy slices of it. Watermelon has not always been my favorite fruit to eat, but it is definitely one of the cutest fruits out there, which makes it perfect for decorating a little notecard!
I created these simple cards using a fun technique that allows you to easily make stickers out of washi tape! Want to learn? Let’s do this!
Materials (I’ve included affiliate links where possible):
- Blank Notecards and Envelopes
- Washi Tape (I used light pink, pink and black floral, and green stripes)
- Craft Knife
- Cutting Mat
- Wax Paper
- Pen or Marker
Begin by making a template for the shapes that represent the middle of the watermelon wedge and the rind. I just used a plate and ruler to help me create the shapes and then cut out the templates out of a scrap piece of cardstock.
Next, take two small pieces of wax paper, overlapping them slightly in the middle.
Cover the center part of the wax paper with washi tape making sure to slightly overlap each piece. (I thought the black centers of the flowers on this washi tape kind of looked like watermelon seeds, so I used it for the center.)
Use a craft knife and the template to cut out the piece.
Ta-DA! You just made a washi tape sticker! So easy, right? And here’s why we used two pieces of overlapping wax paper: it gives you a nice little tab on the back for easy peeling.
Voila! All ready to stick! Place it on the card front and then repeat the process for the rind piece or pieces.
You can leave it as is or add a little message to the front of the handmade cards. I went with a couple “sweet” messages that I just wrote on with a favorite pen, but if you aren’t feeling up to some handlettering, you could print a message on the card front first.
To make a matching envelope, place lengths of washi tape on the back flap and then trim off the excess with your craft knife.
Super simple AND super cute – two of my favorite things! If you make some, I would LOVE to see them! Tag me on instagram, or share to my facebook page!
