I don’t seem to crochet as much during the hot summer months, but it is finally starting to cool down here, and my yarn is coming out again. So here’s a little hat for you to work up if your yarn is coming out again too. Fresh off my hooks, the Multi-Strand Big Bow Hat.
I got my inspiration for this hat the other day when my little sweetheart and I were using yarn to outline shapes as part of our preschool activities. After we were done doing our shapes, I took a few of the yarn scraps and braided them into a bracelet for my little girl. The different colors and yarn weights looked so cool braided together, I decided I needed to make a hat using the same yarns.
I worked up a simple hat with the three yarns and a large hook, and then added a fun bow made out of the lightest weight yarn for a girly touch.
This pattern will create a hat that should fit most toddler/preschool age kids with 18″-20″ circumference heads. Let me know if there is interest in other sizes, and I can update the pattern.
Materials
1 ball bulky weight yarn (I used Bernat Roving in Low Tide)
1 ball worsted weight yarn (This was a wool I got from a big box craft store, but I’m not sure on the brand)
1 ball fingering weight yarn (I used Palette from Knit Picks)
P (10 mm) crochet hook
G (4 mm) crochet hook
Hat
The hat is worked in the round, holding the three strands of yarn together as one strand. With the P hook:
Begin with magic loop (how to here)
Rnd 1: ch 1, 6 sc in loop, sl st to join.
Rnd 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st of previous round, sl st to join (12 sc).
Rnd 3: ch 1, * sc, 2 sc, repeat from * 5 times, sl st to join (18 sc).
Rnd 4: ch 1, * sc, sc, 2 sc, repeat from * 5 times, sl st to join (24 sc).
Rnd 5: ch 1, * sc, sc, sc, 2 sc, repeat from * 5 times, sl st to join (30 sc).
Rnds 6-15: ch 1, sc around, sl st to join. (For a longer hat, work more of these rows)
Rnds 16-17: ch 1, working in back loops only, sc around, sl st to join.
Finish off, weave in ends.
Bow
The bow is a made by crocheting a long ribbon piece, tying a bow, and then sewing the bow to the hat.
Using fingering weight yarn and G hook:
Ch 13, dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc in each ch (10 dc). Ch 2, turn.
Row 1: dc in each st across (10 dc), ch 2, turn.
Rows 2-51 (or until piece is about 20 inches long): dc in each st across (10 dc), ch 2, turn.
Row 52: dc in each st across (10 dc). Finish off, weave in ends.
Create two loops in ribbon and knot into bow. (See photo below).
Sew tied bow onto hat using fingering weight yarn and yarn needle. Do not sew through top loops of bow.

Wow Alexis, I love how the triple strand colors go together! I don't knit/crochet during the summer months either, but it's freezing here, so i guess it's about time to dig out the yarn. There are probably a few WIPs left over from last year hiding somewhere. 🙂
