Hey guys! Today I am joining up with some of my favorite design and hand lettering friends to bring you all a bunch of crafty cut files. Because I love me some free cut files! If you don’t know what I’m talking about, a cut file is a file you can use with your Silhouette, Cricut, or other cutting machine. You can cut these designs out of vinyl or other materials to make mugs, tote bags, wall decals, whatever you want! Today we are sharing files with a “craft” theme.
When I was trying to think of what words or phrase I wanted to letter for this cut file, I was browsing pinterest (as I do) and I came across the quote “make something today even if it sucks.” I decided that was the one. I really love the idea of creating and making even if the end product doesn’t quite get where you want it to be. But that process of making stuff that kind of sucks is how we improve and develop our skills and learn how to make stuff that rocks. This whole idea always reminds me of this video of a quote from Ira Glass. It’s all about how it takes time and work to push through the challenge of making something that doesn’t quite live up to your goals or expectations. If you haven’t watched it, it’s good stuff. Especially if you are in a creative funk.
Anyway, I lettered the quote using my ipad pro and apple pencil (so much fun!), cut it out of some heat transfer vinyl and ironed it on to a little fabric banner to hang in my craft room to remind me to keep making and creating and to not get too hung up on the fails (which abound, I promise you hahaha).
To make your own banner, you just need to cut a piece of fabric to size. I used a piece of canvas drop cloth. Then, you can hem the edges by sewing or go the easy route like me and just use some fabric glue. Wrap the top around a wooden dowel, glue it in place, and iron on your quote. That’s it! I added a little tassel for some color, which is, of course, totally optional.
You could also use the quote to cut out a decal for your wall or put it on a mug or tote bag. It would make kind of a great mug, no? You can read all about making your own custom mugs with vinyl right here, OR if you are interested in learning how to make all kinds of awesome vinyl projects with your Silhouette, then you should check out my Craftsy class all about that.
