Halloween Boo Plaque: Dollar Store Tray Upgrade
How about another black and white Halloween decor craft today? I think my Halloween vignette is all done now, and I'm happy to show it off all finished to you soon. This little sign/plaque/whatever you want to call it adds a bit of fun to the display, and it cost me a whole dollar to make using craft supplies I had on hand. It started off with a black plastic tray that I found at the dollar store. I thought it looked like it could maybe work as a frame, and right away I knew I wanted to try gilding some of those skulls on the border. I painted the inside of the tray white using matte craft paint and a brush. It took a couple coats. Then I gilded two of the skulls using metal leaf. (See more about how to gild here.) I finished it off by painting a swirly "boo" using a round brush Continue Reading
DIY Jack Skellington Kid’s Costume
I was so excited last year when my son asked to be Jack Skellington for Halloween. I knew it would be a fun challenge to create a costume for him, and I had such a good time doing it. Here he is in version one of the costume: So not the happiest looking kid there on the left, but the outfit looks pretty dang good, don't you think? We tried face paint for Jack's head the first time around (for a pre-Halloween party), and my son wasn't a huge fan. So I decided to take a different approach for trick or treating. After some pinterest research, I found this great hat that inspired me to quickly crochet up a new jack skellington head for my little man. See? Much happier! And so cute, I think. (Sorry about the quality of these photos... I was not in a blogging state of mind last year, Continue Reading
Owl Wreath and Halloween Project Parade
Guys. I am so, so, SO excited to be a part of this awesome Halloween Project Parade with so many talented ladies. I'm going to tell you all about how I made my "spooky" owl wreath, and then be sure to check out all the other great projects and link up your latest Halloween creations (I'll be sharing my favorites on Pinterest, Google Plus, and Facebook throughout the month)! I decided to go all black and white for Halloween this year (with a touch of gold thrown in). I went to the dollar store to see what black and white supplies I could scoop up, and I got pretty excited when I found this cute (I mean spooky?) little black owl. I knew he would look great on a black and white Halloween wreath. Here's how I made it, and how you can make one too. Start off by gathering your Continue Reading
Mr. and Mrs. Skull Cameo – Free Printable!
I'm pretty excited about my new friends. Don't they look great? All dressed to the nines and ready for Halloween. They are probably my favorite part of my currently evolving Halloween vignette, and they were really easy to put together. Want Mr. and Mrs. Skull to join your Halloween party? Here's what to do: Download the free printables (here and here). Make your prints extra special with a little gold leaf (see how below). Frame and hang! These skulls were inspired by these cool kids from Peppermint Plum. Their version uses a cute orange grosgrain ribbon, but I decided a pop of gold would go better with my black and white theme. I made Mr. and Mrs. Skull using Totenkopf dingbat font and this bow clip art. After printing them out on cardstock, I gilded the bows. You Continue Reading
Free “I Solemnly Swear…” Harry Potter Printable
Get this free "I solemnly swear I am up to no good" printable to add a little Harry Potter creepiness to your Halloween display this year. I'm working on getting all my Halloween decor together, and having a lot of fun with it. I'm going with a black and white theme this year, with some gold thrown in, of course. When thinking about Halloween-y phrases I could make into some art for the entryway, I thought of "I solemnly swear I am up to no good" from the Marauder's Map in Harry Potter. It seemed perfectly mischievous for Halloween. I tried my hand at a little watercolor calligraphy, and it's definitely far from perfect, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Want to print off your own copy? Free "I Solemnly Swear that I am Up to No Good" Printable Before Continue Reading
White Chocolate Macadamia Nut French Macarons
Guys. Baking french macarons is addicting. It reminds me of running a bit, which is kind of weird, but hear me out. Before I ran my first half marathon I thought, I just want to do it one time to see if I can do it, but as soon as I crossed the finish line, I knew I was going to have to run another to see if I could get a better time. Baking french macarons is going kind of the same way. The first batch was just to see if I could pull them off, and now I have to keep trying to bake a better mac. It would probably be better for losing the baby weight if I could get more into that running addiction than the macaron addiction I'm falling into now. Probably. Anyway. I've made a few flavors of french macarons since the varieties I made for my daughter's tea party, and these little ladies Continue Reading
DIY Vintage Disneyland Pennants
My kids' Vintage Disneyland Room has been pretty close to finished for a while now, but I've got a few last touches I want to wrap up before I share the completed room with you all. Until then, here's a little project that brought a bit more vintage Disney to the room. For a while I considered purchasing some vintage Disneyland felt pennants from etsy or ebay, but I finally decided to make my own reproduction versions. An original pennant would be awesome to have, but the benefit of making my own is that I could use colors that fit into my color scheme. I started off by printing off the word "Disneyland" using the Started by a Mouse font. I also found an image of the castle to make my stencil. I cut my stencils out of freezer paper using an Xacto knife. Then, I ironed the freezer Continue Reading
