Learn how to make cute Christmas pom poms shaped like retro holiday lights! This simple little craft is a fun project to make and decorate your home this Christmas!
Are you ready for Christmas crafts? I hope so because here they come!
This little project is super simple, but turns out really cute, if you ask me. Plus, it’s a great way to keep your hands busy while bingeing on cheesy Christmas movies (which is currently one of my favorite past times).
I love pom pom crafts! If you are looking for other pom pom ideas maybe check out my pom pom earrings or pom pom picture holders. This is also a great time to dip into your yarn stash and use up some of the extras balls or bits and bobs you may have tucked away.
DIY Christmas Light Pom Pom Garland
You really only need a few supplies to get crafting!
Supplies:
- Worsted Acrylic Yarn
- Clover Pom Pom Maker
- Small Sharp Scissors
- Small Wooden Spools (about 1″ long)
- Silver Paint
- Silver Beads
If you don’t have a pom pom maker, then you can learn how to make a pom pom with your just your hands here. However, I absolutely love the Clover pom pom maker and fully recommend it. It just makes it super easy to get tight, full, and beautifully shaped pom poms.
How to Make Christmas Pom Poms
I have a little video tutorial you can check out below, or keep scrolling if you prefer to read. (If you can’t see the video below, it may be because of an ad blocker.)
Step 1. Make and Shape Pom Pom
The first step is to make yourself a pom pom. Since you will need to trim down the pom pom quite a bit to create the Christmas light shape, you need to start with a large pom pom.
I recommend using a worsted weight acrylic yarn for these pom poms. I did make a few with cotton yarn as well, but I just found the acrylic yarns easier to work with in this project.
Here’s how to use the Clover pom pom maker to make a pom pom:
- Open up one side of the pom pom maker.
- Wrap the yarn around both C-shaped pieces over and over, until they are well covered.
- Close that side of the pom pom maker, and repeat on the other side.
- Use small sharp scissors (like these) to cut through the wrapped yarn on both sides. The pom pom maker has a little channel for your scissors, which makes this easier.
- Cut a piece of yarn about a foot long, wrap it around the middle of the pom pom maker, pull it tight, and secure with a double knot.
- Open up the C-shaped pieces of the pom pom maker and then pull apart the center pieces to release the pom pom. (It might feel like you are breaking your pom pom maker at this point, but it’s okay!)
You now have a nice fluffy pom pom all ready to shape! Time to give that pom pom a serious hair cut.
The goal is to trim that pom pom into an oval shape. Hold the long tails used to tie around the middle of your pom pom, and trim the sides of the pom pom to give it an elongated, Christmas light shape.
Step 2. Paint Wooden Spool
Next, use your paint brush and metallic silver paint to paint the wooden spool. My spools needed two coats to get that nice metallic shine. If I were making these again, I think I would give silver spray paint a try instead.
You can also paint your spools gold or green, but I liked the look of the silver. Use whatever makes your little Christmas light loving heart happy!
Step Three. Assemble Christmas Light Pom Poms
When your painted spools have dried completely, simply thread the long tails of your shaped pom poms through the spool and through one of your silver beads. Then secure the spool and bead in place with a few knots.
And that’s it! You can tie a couple of pom pom Christmas lights onto a gift as a very cute little topper.
OR tie a whole bunch onto a ribbon or yarn chain to create a pom pom Christmas light garland!
So fun, right? I’m also thinking they would make pretty cute little ornaments, and I love that you can make them in whatever color you like!
Happy Making!
